Mr. Book just finished Punish Treason, Reward Loyalty: The Forgotten Goals Of Constitutional Reform After The Civil War, by Mark A. Graber.
This book was published in February 2024.
The author argued that, while Sections 1 and 5 of the Fourteenth Amendment has always gotten the attention, it was really Sections 2, 3 and 4 that were supposed to be the heart of the amendment. The book made a very persuasive case that the purpose was to prevent the former Confederate states from reestablishing power, with the same people who had committed treason and the same ideology again dominating the nation.
I give this book an A.
Goodreads requires grades on a 1-5 star system. In my personal conversion system, an A equates to 5 stars. (A or A+: 5 stars, B+: 4 stars, B: 3 stars, C: 2 stars, D or F: 1 star).
